The workshop is the fifth in the series of Slovak GEMS workshops. The previous four were held in 1994 (Donovaly), 1997 (Banská Bystrica), 2001 (Bratislava) and 2005 (Stará Lesná). For about fifteen years, the map-theoretic community has been meeting every year somewhere on Earth. Timings and places have been stabilized, with a period of 4 years, on Slovenia (in the years congruent to 3 mod 4), New Zealand (0 mod 4), Slovakia (1 mod 4), and some other places such as Arizona or Portugal (2 mod 4).

The workshop should bring together people interested in various aspects of graphs embedded on surfaces. The programme will consist of lectures by invited speakers and short talks by participants. Contributed talks should be related to one or more of the following topics:

Invited speakers: The venue for the 2009 GEMS workshop will be Hotel Stupka, Tále, Slovakia, a tourist resort in the Low Tatra mountains, nearby Banská Bystrica. The Tale resort offers lots of services, including one of the best golf courses in the country. In the neighbourhood, one can find other attractions such as caves, old-time railway, open-air museum of forrestry, etc.
